A big trend in wellness at the moment is this brightly colored latte drink - Golden Milk Latte.
This liquid cold originated with ancient Ayurveda thousands of years ago. It features one of my favorite spices- Turmeric which is so incredibly amazing in every way.
I have made this part of my daily evening ritual and it is so soothing and healing. Right now I am enjoying this hot, but you can experiment with preparing this over ice as an iced latte.
You can of course make this in the morning. It's a wonderful substitute if you don't like coffee, or are on a cleanse and can't have coffee. I do a scheduled monthly cleanse + reset for 3 days, where I will have this instead of coffee.
TURMERIC
Often referred to as the “Queen of Spices,” its main characteristics are a pepper-like aroma, sharp taste and golden color. Turmeric contains a wide range of antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, anticarcinogenic, antimutagenic and anti-inflammatory properties.
It is also loaded with many healthy nutrients such as protein, dietary fiber, niacin, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin K, potassium, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium and zinc. Due to all these factors, turmeric is often used to treat a wide variety of health problems.
Supports the immune system, helps with memory and brain function, regulates metabolism and weight management, detoxes the liver and boosts immunity.
It is also incredible for promoting glowing skin.
*Adding black pepper to turmeric increases your body to absorb turmeric greatly and receive all the benefits above
COCONUT OIL
Another amazing ingredient. It's antimicrobial properties make it a perfect food for maintaining optimal gut flora balance.
Coconut oil contains lauric acid, which is known to reduce candida, fight bacteria, and create a hostile environment for viruses. Many diseases today are causes by the overgrowth of bad bacteria, funguses, viruses and parasites in the body. Coconut oil works by reducing stress on the liver and by lowering oxidative stress. Also, coconut oil supports detoxification because of how it works with the liver. Using coconut oil may help naturally balance hormones as well.
TIPS
Key to making this recipe a daily routine is making a big batch of turmeric paste first. This way all you need to do is add a little spoonful of the paste into your milk, cook and enjoy!!
Some people take this paste directly, without making it into a concoction. It’s good for pain relief. For severe pain, it’s recommended to take half to 1 teaspoon of turmeric paste a day. The pain should subside after 3 to 4 days.
STEP 1
TURMERIC PASTE
Ingredients:
1/4 cup of organic turmeric powder
1/2 teaspoon of organic ground pepper
1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon (optional for a chai latte)
1/2 cup of filtered water
Mix all ingredients in a small pan on medium high, stirring constantly until you get a thick paste. Cool and store in a small jar in the refrigerator, The mixture should last for several months in the fridge.
STEP 2
GOLDEN MILK LATTE
Ingredients:
1 cup of almond milk (hemp or coconut milk are great options as well)
1 teaspoon of coconut oil
1/4 teaspoon or more of turmeric paste
Honey, maple syrup, stevia or agave to sweeten as you like
Directions:
Combine all ingredients in pan on medium heat. Stirring constantly until it starts to boil, then take off heat. Pour in your favorite mug and enjoy!!
To make a iced late, combine all of the ingredients and blend on high in your blender. No heating necessary. Pour over ice, sip + do a happy dance =)
